One thing I love is watching people (all politics aside) get better as they age.
I’m thinking of the Carter Center, Jimmy and Roslyn Carter’s lovely compound in intown Atlanta. I’ve seen great exhibits there, even one on fishing flies, which seem to be mini works of art. Most of all, the Center, as you know, spends time and money fighting Guinea worm disease around the world. What a good thing. Since I get the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, I’ve been able to follow their good causes since at least back to 1986, whether that’s building Habitat homes or eradicating dreaded diseases. Look at Bill Clinton doing good. Look at Hillary Clinton doing the best she can in the world of danged if you do, danged if you don’t diplomacy. Both have aged admirably. There is a world of folks who fall in this category, not all past presidents and spouses, of course, not all wealthy, not all with anything in common at all—just people who got older and wiser and help the world go around a little better. I see them all the time. One day I hope to grow up and be one of them.
