Well, for a long time now, I have thought that I was the only person in America really excited about the Census...our chance at true civic engagement! However, today, I have an enthusiastic partner—Clifton Jackson, 88, a WWII vet, and now, the first person to be counted in the census! He's from the Alaskan Inupiat Eskimo village of Noorvik, just north of the Arctic Circle.
The village is all excited! The director of the Census Bureau kicked off the counting festivities by arriving by dogsled in subzero temperature, much to the delight of schoolchildren, tribal leaders, and those who have worked hard to make the day as festive as possible with food, dancing, and other fun.
Imagine it. It makes me really happy. Now I really am excited about the census!
You know Gallopade has done a great census poster and census kit for the classroom. If you have a class
Noorvik knows what it's all about; let's help all kids know how lucky they are to live in a country where not only do they count, but are counted, and those numbers actually mean they are better represented in the American process.
Now, I'm going to see if I can eat my oatmeal while I'm smiling so big.
