The Mystery at Fort Sumter

The 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War is in 2011, so I wanted to get a head start on helping kids understand the Ground Zero of "The First Shot Fired in the Civil War."  Besides, Bob and I love Charleston, South Carolina and all its history!  I love to take a place I know pretty well, but focus in on one aspect, so historic Fort Sumter and the events that set Americans at war with one another is a great back

drop for a mystery.  I also wanted to set a mystery in Charleston during a blizzard!  I have been on the coast when it gets such a rare event, and it is unusual, to say the least.  It certainly complicates life, and therefore a mystery!  To add to that, a mystery set in Charleston certainly deserves some weird characters and I love the one in this story.  She is based on an aunt I had who was a deaf mute; and, this is what I made her in this story, plus dead.  However, my eagle-eyed editor noted that this dead deaf mute in my story was alive and kicking and talking all the time!  Ooooookay; what a boo-boo, easily fixed...ah, the power of the pen!  Would that the wounds of war were so easily repaired.
